1. Stopped vs Stopped (deallocated)

Today VMs can be in a stopped or stopped(deallocated) state. This is an important distinction for billing purposes as the stopped state continues to bill for resources and stopped (deallocated) does not. Needless to say this is confusing because the portal (old version) has a "Shutdown" command that puts the VM in the Stopped(deallocated) state but if you "shutdown" from within the VM it is just in a Stopped state.

PLEASE MAKE THIS DISTINCTION MORE CLEAR!! :-)

The new portal for managing VM only shows my stopped (deallocated) VMS as just Stopped. This is totally confusing.

Thanks!!!!

3. History of scheduled event

For the maintenance that doesn't require a reboot, customers can know it only through Scheduled Events API.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/maintenance-and-updates?toc=/azure/virtual-machines/linux/toc.json&bc=/azure/virtual-machines/linux/breadcrumb/toc.json#maintenance-that-doesnt-require-a-reboot

Several customer requests easier way to grasp the affected resources and that history (e.g. dashboard).

5. Growing number of "Microsoft Hyper-V Network Adapters"

A VM is shut down and deallocated, a new network adapter will be used after it starts next time and the old network adapter is kept hidden.

When network adapter count is over 145, customer may face some network issue.
<https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/azure/en-US/e206ea0a-9d61-4380-99a5-1543a12a7234/growing-numbers-of-microsoft-hyperv-network-adapters-cause-problems?forum=WAVirtualMachinesforWindows>

I understand it is by design and we should delete hidden network adapter to resolve this issue.

However, when we deallocate and start VM because we need to reduce costs using Autoscale or automation or other, this behavior is very big problem.

I want to improve this behavior.

6. OpenBSD Virtual Machine

I would love to see an OpenBSD virtual machine, we use OpenBSD along side windows and would be interested in moving our entire cloud services to you if there was an OpenBSD virtual machine

7. Public IP Mapping on Nested VM!

We are working on Azure Public and checking nested VM for this we have created one instance "Standard E4s v3 (4 vcpus, 32 GB memory)". Hyper-V role has been installed successfully and also we have created 3 VMs successfully, now when we are setting networking for these created VM per MS KB "https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/user-guide/nested-virtualization" everything is working fine but our objective is still not getting solved with this.

We wanted to MAP a public IP on these VMs but per KB NAT is only solving purpose if we need to run internet only on created VMs or forwarding working…

8. Ensure Virtual Machine GenerationID does not change over a Shut Down and Start pair of operations

Microsoft invented the VM GenerationID as a means of determining when an important VM transition event has occured. As per Microsoft's paper on the subject, the GenerationID of a guest should not change on restart or migrate operations. This works fine directly on Hyper-V, but an Azure managed VM will see a GenerationID change when the VM is Shut Down then Started (as two separate operations, a single 'Restart' operation does not change the GenerationID). Incidentally, the virtual SMBIOS UUID also changes during this operation, which is wrong too (SMBIOS UUID should change only on a clone operation).
I imagine…

9. Allow Cancelling a Running Command started via "Run Command"

From this issue:

https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs/issues/12741

We should have the ability to cancel a command started via "Run Command." This would primarily be to allow a new command to be started in its place, but the ability to (possibly) actually cease the command on the server itself could also be helpful.

The ability to store common scripts and run them would help make this "I just noticed a syntax error and want to try again" problem less of an issue, but that's already covered here: https://feedback.azure.com/forums/216843-virtual-machines/suggestions/34455544-run-command-browse-azure-storage-for-script

10. Add a description for VM in the portal

Add a description of the VM that will show up on the dashboard while pinning a VM. we have 10 VMs and we would like to get a briefed idea of which one is which - name is not enough.

11. [REQUEST] Alert service admin and co-admins in case of VM reboot caused by Azure platform issue.

I have experienced VM reboot caused by host node issue several times. VM sometimes couldn’t startup successfully after reboot. Now, there is no way to know such kind of VM reboot immediately and I can’t do anything until I realize the issue by myself. Please alert service admin and co-admins in case of VM reboot caused by Azure Platform Issue.

12. Clone complete Resource Group

For DEV/TEST/PROD environments, it would be great to have a the possibility to clone all resources within a resource group to a new one. (Public IP's and other unique resources will be an issue), but as far as the VM's are cloned, it would save A LOT of time!

13. For Virtual machines, allow configurable outbound TCP timeout.

Currently you can only configure the inbound tcp timout. The default outbound timeout for TCP connections is 4 minutes and is non configurable/by design. It's important that users have the ability to change this, perhaps up to a value of 30 which is similar to the inbound properties.

14. Dynamics CRM images on Azure

The Sharepoint Farm deployment on Azure is a great capability. Having a similar capability for Dynamics CRM (on-premises) is going to be a huge win. There is already the Dynamics CRM online offering, however this doesn't satisfy most of the use case scenarios and having the one click CRM instance deployment capability would be a huge leap

15. Install os on vm from file.iso

Definitely want to see this as the current procedure to create and upload VM's is not easy or user friendly.

Compared to the rest of the Azure platform this is a big let down. If you look at vCloud for instance the ability to upload an ISO or an OVA/F to build VM's makes my life as an admin much easier.

Please implement some form of ISO/OVA/OVF

16. The Azure VM internal DNS domain names are too long.

The Azure VM internal DNS domain names are too long.

Azure IaaS VM's created using the Preview Portal using the
"Resource Manager" deployment model generate DNS domain names
that are too long, for example:

03v3fn0ewrau5aiydhfewgpjza.cx.internal.cloudapp.net

Since the FQDN max length, in Linux at least is 64 chars, that
leaves only 12 chars for the "Computer Name". There are no
warnings or protections on creating a VM with a length longer
than 12, so when the host comes up, and DHCP sets the hostname
based on the "Computer Name" it finds that it has an illegal
FQDN length.

It seems that…

17. Make Solaris, OpenSolaris and SmartOS VMs available

Pretty please, allocate some resources to make Oracle Solaris and smartOS by Joyent (the Node.js guys) VMs available in Azure. This is a one time gig for y'all and lifetime ease-of-use for your consumers!!

I am familiar that we can build our own system, but last time I checked, Hyper-V has issues with SmartOS in networking (legacy switch) area. A blog by Azure/MSOpenTech to configure Solaris and SmartOS in Azure and local/private Hyper-V would be really really helpful.

Thanking you in anticipation.

18. Offer granular RBAC for virtualMachine serial console access

As confirmed via Support Case 119052326000457 there is one, and only one method, to grant access to a VM's serial console, which is to obtain the Virtual Machine Contributor role which may be a lot more privileged than an individual may need to do their job.

Within our organization it is important to follow the principles of least privilege wherever feasible. As such we want to be able to grant a support team access to a VM's serial console without that same team being able to make IaaS config changes to the VM (shutdown, reconfigure, etc.). This would help prevent…

19. total and regional and vCPU

The total regional vCPUs should be increased similar way as for each individual SKUs via the Usage + quotas page.
As total regional VCPUs is not the sum of each individual quotas, its increase is a separate request.

20. Allow a VM to be added to an availability set without recreating the VM

Currently after you have created a VM you are not able to add this to an existing or new availability set. It would be great if this was available function to be completed at any point during a VM's lifecycle.
