Having the ability to add a description to a service or virtual machine would be a welcome addition.

This simple feature would be a massive help in keeping track of resources and managing them. Very much needed.

This is a much needed feature. The tags solve a different problem.

Using a standard tag like "MS_Description" should do the trick. Put the description text in the value to the key "MS_Description".
Unfortunately "MS_Description" is not supported by Visual Studio like the SQL Server (Database Engine) extended property "MS_Description". But if you reuse the name of the key/property then you can reuse the pattern across platforms.
I will post the suggestion on supporting "MS_Description" - when I have figured out where to put it...
It should be available to all resources. It definitely helps when you have to manage a large environmnet.

Definitely, this is needed if you have large environments. It should be implemented to all resources, or most of them. Tags are not covering this functionality. This should be simple large text field, and it should be visible somewhere in overview blade. If it would support markdown, it would be a plus.
I totally agree. Having descriptions for all object (storage accounts, automation accounts) etc. would help a lot!
