Automated Hot Add and Hot Removal of CPUs and Memory
Allow for the setting of thresholds for CPU and Memory utilization that would trigger the Hot Addtion (or Hot Removal) or vCPUs and vRAM from a virtual machine, for those Guest operating systems that support those functions.
Aligned with that, make sure that Windows supports these features in Azure.
Right now, we don’t plan to support hot addition of hardware to a running VM. You must increase the full size (versus incremental hardware increases).
This is an appalling oversight from Microsoft. As other users below have stated, the whole point of virtualization is to pay for the consumption you need when you need it. Hyper-V and VMWare both support hot add CPU's/memory so why can't we do this in Azure?. Requiring a reboot just at the time that you need to scale up is not practical. I can't scale out my current design due to license limitations on the software so want to be able to scale up.
I agree with the request. Assigning resources on the fly with Hot-Add is what virtualization is all about. Azure, don't make us treat your virtual servers like physical boxes. Isn't that the point in the first place i.e. Getting away from bloated hardware and closer to better utilization. It's not good to pay for $100 of hardware and use $50 of it. We should pay for resources used not assigned like storage.
