  1. Real Checkpoints - not VM Images

Checkpoints, as they are in Hyper-V and NOT VM Images as announced at Teched and already in production.

VM Images are not really the solution:

    1. Amazon stores only the bits that have changed since the last snapshot, not again the whole machine.
If a have a server with TBs of data and checkpoint the virtual machine, why should I have to pay for the storage twice?

    2. For a quick restore of the checkpoint, we would have to deploy the VM Image - no real solution in relation to how normal Hyper-V checkpoints work.

  2. Provide a simple portal where organisations can allow their employees to request VMs on their subscription at the click of a button

Azure is intimidating to non-technical people, but the potential for organisations to use it to host their employees computers is huge. They would no longer have to worry about buying hardware for their employees, dealing with it's depreciation or end of life disposal. At the same time, employees could then request a powerful VM from this Lite Portal in one click of a button for their work from their tablet, phone or laptop without needing to worry about the technical or financial complexity that currently exists with getting a VM on Azure.

Can you share a few more details on what you are thinking about here? Just a more simple version of the portal?

  3. Green Computing Option

Allow me to pay a little more to host my data/services on machines that are powered by renewable energy.

This is a very interesting idea and one I like a lot! Let me dig into whether this is something we could consider in the future. Thanks for the idea! :)

  4. Provide the ability to reimage a VM

With jaw-dropping suprise - I've just discovered that there is no way to simply "reimage" a VM with a fresh install of the OS.

The only avenue provided is to delete everything and start from scratch. Instead of a quick one-button solution, i now get to spend hours dealing with this.

  5. Allow VIP Swap when Staging slot is up and Running

Recently we had a problem where we had ~1h of downtime which could have been avoided if VIP swap wasn’t failing.
The problem was that 1 single VM was in a busy state in Production slot. All VMs in the staging slot were up and Running.

Can you please allow a VIP swap if:
    1. All VMs in Staging slot are in Running state
    2. There’s the same or higher number of VMs in Staging slot compared to Production

I know that it’s by design that VIP swap is possible only if all VMs in both Staging and Production slot…

  6. Add slider bar

Add slider bar in Choose VM Size pane in portal.azure.com when you do View all so you don't get the whole sha-bang all the time

  7. Allow VM Extensions to communicate via 168.63.129.16 to Storage and Key Vault

Currently, VM Extensions require access to Azure Storage and/or Key Vault in order to function, and according to MS Support, this is achieved via the internet on port 443.

For IaaS solutions where generic internet traffic is blocked (which seems to be agreed best-practice) Custom Script deployments can occasionally fail, and all subsequent ARM deployments fail.

The 'solution' to allow port 443 traffic out of the VMs isn't a viable one for secure solutions, neither is white-listing the Storage and/or Key Vault URLs, being s that's not possible in Windows Firewall, NSGs, or Routing Tables, forcing the use of costly…

  8. Support MSDN images (SharePoint, SQL Server, BizTalk, Dynamics) in Azure Resource Manager templates

Support MSDN images (SharePoint, SQL Server, BizTalk, Dynamics) in Azure Resource Manager templates for dev/test scenarios.

For example the following 3 VM SharePoint template: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-sharepoint-farm-azure-preview/ should be able to deploy using SQL and SharePoint images from MSDN, thus not attracting production licensing for dev scenarios.

  9. Allow shutdown from VM to deallocated state

Allow regular shutdown inside VM to go always to Stopped(deallocated) state. This could be a flag set per VM just like static IP. Or it could be even default in Azure, why there is the Stopped state anyway?

  10. enable azure active directory as a domain controller for IaaS virtual machines.

Today for IaaS setup in Azure we need to deploy dedicated machines for Active Directory to get domain functionality. Can you enable IaaS VMs join to a Azure AD tenant within the same subscription ?

  11. VM logs

Currently, there are no logs of operations such as create VM, joining the VM to domain, enabling remote PS on VM, failure to run/create VM etc. Azure should work on making of the VM logs better in IAAS subscriptions.

  12. CoreOS Container Linux end of life - Fedora CoreOS not supported on Azure

CoreOS is reaching end-of-life on May 26, 2020 and will be removed from Azure images in September 2020. Successor to that will be fedora CoreOS, however as of now it is not currently natively supported for Azure. The ask is to have Fedora CoreOS available and supported in Azure.

  13. API for Disk Attachments that does not require updating the VM model

Currently to attach a Data Disk to a Virtual Machine requires submitting this as a part of the Virtual Machine payload (e.g. a appending to the list of data disks).

Whilst this works when you want to define the Virtual Machine definition in a single payload, unfortunately this makes it challenging when breaking this apart into multiple payloads to provide a better user experience - which means that we've had to fake this via calling the API sequentially using locks to ensure multiple disk attachments happen sequentially.

This functionality already exists for the DevTest Labs Service - which has an…

  14. Azure StorageV2 for Azure Site Recovery support

We are implementing Azure Site Recovery D/R and we noticed that there are still no support for Azure Storage V2 which brings additional features.
We would love to have V2 storage support for ASR.

  15. Enhanced Azure Security for sending Emails

Since November 15, 2017, any new Virtual Machines (VMs) in Azure are now unable connect outbound using TCP port 25, see https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/mast/2017/11/15/enhanced-azure-security-for-sending-emails-november-2017-update/. There are certain subscriptions where an exception can be made to allow outbound connections on port TCP 25, but not for CSP subscriptions. I understand Microsoft's reasoning behind this to reduce spam being sent from Azure VMs, however this is very inconvenient when using a 3rd party application on the VM that needs to send email. Microsoft's solution to this is to use an authenticated SMTP service on port 587. I would like to use Office 365…

  16. B1S Windows Server is not a viable VM

B1S is just too small of a VM to be viable. Provisioning it in Central US takes 27 minutes, and then when it finally starts everything is so unbearably slow that you can't do anything. Takes minutes for Task Manager to start and paint itself. I don't know why it's being offered when it's so underpowered that it is really impossible to use.

  17. Storage Optimized VMs should be having higher IOPS and MB/s throughput

Currently Storage Optimized VMs have very limited IOPS and MB/s throughput.

Our Oracle server has 6x1TB premium (6xP30) disks added to it. Which can go upto 1200MB/s throughput. Disk Block Sizes are configured at 1MB. Still we are restricted to the VM limit of 125MB/s. (PFA the current options)

Please consider higher VM level limits.

  18. Add Auto-Start companion to Auto-Shutdown

Auto Shutdown is now available in the new portal for VM's. There is an Auto Start in the DevLab - We need the Auto-Start routine added to the Resource manager. Or, call it Hibernate - with a "GoToSLeep" and "WakeUp" settings

  20. Make Windows Server 2016 Core available

Not every role is available in Nano. I don't need full GUI for domain controllers for example, but can't deploy on Nano.

Perhaps other roles are coming in Nano, but in the meantime make core available, as it is for Windows 2012.
