  1. Portal option to "Add/Remove from load balancer"

Please allow a portal user to pick an instance and remove it immediately from the load balancer.

This can be helpful in a production environment when you want to take an instance out of use so you can perform an upgrade or perform diagnostics on it.

Currently you'd need to edit an endpoint monitor to return a non-200 response.

The ability to then finish your maintenance work and then "Re-add to load balancer" would be necessary.

    Hey Andrew,

You can do this today using the probes from within the VMs. I suspect you want to do it directly from the portal in the same way as the probes, yes?

  2. virtual machines column showing user that created

when you create a virtual machine and then revisit mgmt. portal view you have no idea who created that virtual machine, and on what date.

for team shared azure subscriptions this is really important as users don't want to have to bury this kind of information into virtual machine names.

we need it so we can track down who has an a8/a9 virtual machine that's been left running for the past week, or who has a stuck one that needs to be deleted.

we also need the last started/stopped date column view so we can determine if something basically hasn't…

Once we have more AAD integration into the creation and management of VMs, this will be possible. Stay tuned as we dig in here.

Please share more details on what was hard and what didn’t work!! We are VERY passionate to make this better. Please help us. :)

  4. Granular CPU and Memory Proivisioning

Allow the customer to add CPUs and RAM incrementally, so they aren't bound by the predetmined sizes Microsoft thinks is best.

    Hyper-V allows this.
    VMware allows this.

It seems reasonable that Azure should allow this as well.

Obviously the billing model would have to be adjusted to add up the per-vCPU and per-GB-vRAM (per minutes) pricing.

    Isn't this one patently obvious?

Thanks for the feedback, Nick. This is good feedback and would require some complex billing models. Let us look at it.

  5. Reduce cloud costs with Shared virtual cores for Developers and Testers

In Azure the smaller configurations of Virtual Machines (either Windows or Linux) are:

Extra Small (A0) 1 Virtual Core shared 768 MB RAM
Small (A1) 1 Virtual Core 1.75 GB RAM
Medium (A2) 2 Virtual Cores 3.5 GB RAM

You can note that Extra-Small is the only configuration with shared virtual core.

Due to SQLServer requires a minimum of 1 GB of RAM, "Extra Small" has no enought size for running IIS and SQL Server.

The "shared virtual core" option is less expensive because you pay ONLY when your VM is consuming cycles of CPU (in other words, when App…

  7. Fix the incorrect IP's assigned to VM's

It appears new VM's are bing assigned IP's that are geolocated or identified in the wrong regions. In the most recent case, a US-East VM is being detected as coming from Brazil.

IP's should be selectable/changeable from the Admin Portal.

  9. Tiered compute power, analogous to current RAM tiers.

Azure workloads are not all memory limited, nor can every job be easily refactored into a hadoop-like task. Based on current tests, it appears that the available processors are a great deal slower than personal budget laptops for various tasks.

Offering a blend of CPU/Memory options, or even a load balancer selection that uses auto-scale out based on compute bound or memory bound tasks would be a game changer.

  10. Oracle Database VM for BizSpark Subscribers

I want to ask that if it Oracle Database VM is not for Biz Spark subscribers then why it is displaying in our VM list?
Do you think that it is a good practice that first you give option to your customers to create oracle DB VM then ask him to delete that VM ignoring that he have some saved work in that VM.
I think this is your system bug.

    Thanks

  11. Don't send me Virtual Machine Maintenance emails if I don't have any VM deployments

The virtual machine maintenance window emails are annoying and I guess it is sent to every single Azure customer. I'm just a blob storage user and should not be receiving those emails.

  13. Enable possibility to enable Hyper V on Azure servers

    Hi,

I want to learn how to work with Hyper-V. I deployed 2 Server 2012 DC but it is not possible to install Hyper-V as a service to learn how to finetune / debug Hyper-V issues.

The solution at this moment is to launch VMware ESX and deploy Hyper-V under ESX.
I think this can be improved for Azure -> I need IaaS on Azure to decommission my old hardware test lab.

Thanks, Jan. This is actually a limitation of HyperV itself. WE will keep this in mind as we look at future versions of Windows.

  14. Retrieve VM meatdata information from within the VM

I am using Cassandra. Cassandra is a distributed DB (http://cassandra.apache.org/).

Every record is replicated across a configurable number of nodes.
To ensure HA the nodes holding the replicas are selected in different racks. In the Azure cloud the analogy of a different rack is a different Update Domain (for comparison in AWS the analogy is different Availability Zones).
    See more information here http://www.datastax.com/documentation/cassandra/2.0/cassandra/architecture/architectureDataDistributeReplication_c.html

The nodes communicate with each other in p2p protocols and share the "rack" information among themselves. Every node is aware of the network topology of all the other nodes in the cluster including which rack…

Thanks for the feedback. Improved reporting from within the VM is something we will look at improving.

  15. Accelerate VM startup time

Startup time of a Windows VM in AWS is 1-1.5 minutes. In Azure this takes at least 5 minutes. VM Startup time is a big deal!

  16. make installation media available (mount an .iso) for those of us that use Azure VMs

Occasionally we need access to the source media to access scripts or files on our VMs. I recently ran into this issue while following this MSDN article ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn486787.aspx ) while setting up an ADFS farm. There is literally no way forward without the installation media.

Thanks! This is something we are considering as we add enhancements to auto-configuration. You may be able to do this using Azure Files, today.

  17. Add more VM size options

The new A5, A6 are great but too expensive. I need something in between. I need a 4 core 14gb option. In addition, the prices you charge for more RAM seem steep. High end 16GB DIMMS cost $250., you basically charge that PER MONTH for the privilege of getting more RAM. It just seems out of whack.

Thanks, Aaron. We will take a look at this. Do the BASIC sizes allow you to have a bit more flexibility in the pricing?

  18. whole disk encryption

Thanks for the feedback. We just announced partnerships with Trend Micro to enable some encryption solution. This may meet your needs.

  19. Develop VM images, server types (i.e. high CPU core #), specifically for CPU cryptocurrency mining.

The mining software could be compiled and set up and updated for the most popular CPU cryptocurrencies (e.g., HeavyCoin HVC, Primecoin XPM, Riecoin RIC, etc.). The VM images could be developed for ease-of-use for non Linux savvy users who are interested in delving into crypto mining. There are many profitable services who sell Bitcoin or Litecoin cloud mining services, so Windows Azure could develop a line of CPU mining services to make it easy, since the infrastructure is already in place.

  20. Offer spot requests, similar to AWS

This is a significant advantage in the AWS offering. Using EC2 spot requests my effective price is much lower than in Azure.
