  1. Use "az vm repair" extension to create repair VM with private IP only

A few months ago, I recommended az vm repair to help create a rescue vm. When running az vm repair create from the subscription, the operation fails because they had a policy to block Public IP addresses.

I propose an optional switch that gives the option to not give the repair VM a Public IP and to specify the pre-existing VNET you'd like to create the Repair VM on.

This way, the operation will complete on such a subscription and the VM will have a Private IP. Then depending on the user's setup (VPN, using another VM as a jump…

  2. Allow to set the value of shutdown timeout (force shutdown)

According to the current behavior, if it is not completed within 10 minutes after the stop(deallocate) operation of Azure VM, I believe that the stop will be forced.

However, it may take a lot of time due to the stop processing of process or OS task.

I hope to be able to determine the forced out timeout time ourselves.

  3. Automatic instance repair for instances in Stopped status state

This option will be extremely useful for scenarios where the instance has been turned off from within the operating system and is in the Stopped state (not Stopped (deallocated)).
We came across a scenario where a script, which runs inside VMs, was turning off instances in the wrong way.

  4. Ubuntu 20.04LTS VMSS Automatic OS Upgrade Support

As of today, Ubuntu Server 20.04LTS is not supported by VMSS Automatic OS Upgrade feature (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machine-scale-sets/virtual-machine-scale-sets-automatic-upgrade#supported-os-images).
This one has been released on April 23, 2020.
Can you please kindly consider support it with VMSS Automatic OS Upgrade feature?

    Many thanks,

  5. IMDS should return network interface IDs

The http://168.63.129.16/metadata/instance endpoint already returns the Azure IDs of the VM and its managed disks. It should also return the IDs of its NICs.

This information would allow configuration management systems (like Puppet) to automatically select the correct values for parameters whose values are different based on the subnet, such as "trusted" IP ranges and network-specific Keyvault IDs and credentials.

  6. Azure Site Recovery - replication of VMs with UEFI and SecureBoot enabled

Have possibility to replicate on-premise (Hyper-V, VMware) Virtual Machines with UEFI and SecureBoot enabled via Azure Site Recovery.

Nowadays replication of VMs with SecureBoot is not supported:

  7. More supported setting names for Add-AzVMAdditionalUnattendContent

Currently the Add-AzVMAdditionalUnattendContent command only supports injecting "AutoLogon" and "FirstLogonCommands" settings for the "Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" unattend component.

This needs expanding to support the "Microsoft-Windows-International-Core" unattend component which would allow setting of the region/locale and language.

  8. Azure Image Builder AIB - add support for premium disk for temp vm

it seems that packer supports the property ManagedImageStorageAccountType = Premium_LRS
in order to influence what disks to be used.
That could help speed up creation of the image.
    thx,

  10. Add Azure VM Lastboot time property in portal

During the manual patch process, we need to use Invoke-AzVMRunCommand to get the last boot-up time. There can be an environment with no Log Analytics or update management solution. Adding the system last boot time helps in avoiding run commands API.

  11. Run Command - RDPSettings

The RDP Settings doesn't show a listing for HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\control\Terminal Server\Winstations\RDP-Tcp\LanAdapter

  12. NVv4 VM incompatible with Recommended GPO

The following knowledgebase article provides some recommended group policy settings when configuring an Azure VM with a graphics card in it:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/configure-vm-gpu
Following the recommended GPO settings on an NVv4 VM yields an incompatible result, whereby accessing the RemoteApps through the standalone installation of the Remote Desktop agent prevents the graphics card from being properly utilised. Resulting in black boxes and lagging cursor.
This has been raised with Microsoft under a ticket and the final resolution of the ticket was to Disable "Use Hardware Graphics Adapters for all Remote Desktop Services Sessions" and Disable "Configure H.264/AVC hardware encoding for Remote…

  15. Give us a simple way to detect if our code is running in Azure

Quoted from this 5-year-old request https://feedback.azure.com/forums/34192--general-feedback/suggestions/15187134-give-us-a-simple-way-to-detect-if-our-code-is-runn

What I'd like to see is a single really simple way to detect whether my code is running inside or outside Azure.

I'd like this to work regardless of whether the code is running as a worker role, web site, web service or on an Azure VM, etc.

I'm actually a maintainer of a Microsoft-owned SDK, and I'd like to have this feature to facilitate such a detection in our SDK.

Brainstorming: can VM populate some a specific ENV VAR such as AZUREREGION=xyz, which can then be used as a flag to indicate

  16. How do you enabled shared disk for an existing managed disk?

I read your article on how to enabled shared disk, but it only talks about creating a new disk with maxshares configured. How do you convert an existing disk to a shared disk? If it's not supported, can you put that in the article?

  18. Azure VM limits should be visible on VM Overview page graphs

In a support case I found one of my VMs was being throttled because it was over disk write limit; the performance (other colors, not red) and limits (in red) should be on the graphs on the overview. This seriously impacts availability when VMs are being throttled and makes for an insidious and hard to understand issue. All performance limits should be visible! Please implement?

  19. Please add some more explicit message that just "script is on execution"

    Hi,

when you launch the command run script, the only feedback that we have is "on execution"...

It's very light and prevent me from being thrust with this web interface...

    Best regards,

  20. Keyvault VM extension for Windows - Allow installing all non-expired versions of a certificate to enable cert rolling

We use AAD token encryption for authenticating to our application, requiring that our application has the private portion of the certificate to decrypt the token and that AAD has the public portion. We are currently using the Keyvault VM extension for Windows to install the private certificate on our VMs.

This works fine until we need to rotate certificates. When we're in the middle of a rotation there's a period of time where the extension only installs the new version of the certificate on new VM instances, since the new version has been generated, but AAD has not yet been…
