Scripting and Command Line Tools

Azure provides two command line tools – PowerShell and Cross-Platform CLI – for you to manage your Azure subscriptions, accelerate your development and automate tasks via scripting, no matter whether you are on Windows, Mac or Linux.

If you have any feedback on Azure PowerShell or Azure Cross-Platform CLI, we’d love to hear it.

  1. Powershell Script to clone a VM with its Data Disks

We have a scenario which may be a requirement to most IaaS users, we run VMs behind a load balancer, when we get a request to update, we remove one of the VMs from the load balancer, patch it and then test it. If tests are successful, we need to create a clone of the patched VM and then reinstate it behind the load balancer.

  3. Keep Azure Powershell Cmdlts up to date with Portal Functionality

There are several things that you can do the in Management Portals that you are unable to do via powershell script. Such as setting Alerts, Backups for Websites, Automated Backups for SQL DB ,etc. These are crucial for anyone want to migrate a large set of DB's or websites over to Azure -- being able to automate these items instead of having to manually do in the portal.

  4. Allow subscription level deployments using the Azure Deployment Template

Would like to leverage the new commands of Add New-AzureRMDeploymen\az deployment to allow the deployment of resources at the subscription level in the Azure Deployment Template form. Currently the form only support Resource Group deployments. The main use case would be the creation of a Resource Group itself. Would like to be about to create a resource group, from a template, using the Azure Template as the interface as outline in this article:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-resource-manager/deploy-to-subscription

  5. Az Support for Loading SSL from KeyVault

The new Az Module lacks support for the CustomDomainHttpsParameters so I can load an SSL certificate from the KeyVault. As it stands now, I have to first use the Az Module to see if the cert exists then hit the management REST API from code. That's not desirable.

  6. Powershell or API ability to add\remove to favorites bar on Azure portal

The list of Azure services in the favorites bar on the left - would love to have a way of adding\removing this or creating a template that I can use when I have to manage a tenant. At the moment, as we are a CSP, each time a new tenant is added, I have to customize the favorites bar to my liking. I'd like to be able to automate this if possible,

    Thanks
    Shaun

  8. Tags property behavior should be the same for ResourceGroup and Resource

I noticed a difference between the Tags property of a Resource Group and the Tags property of a single Resource.

When a new Resource Group (without tags) is created and you get a reference to it using Get-AzureRmResourceGroup and inspect it's "Tags" property, it will return $null.

When you do the same for a new Resource (without tags), using Get-AzureRmResource and querying the "Tags" property will throw a PropertyNotFound exception.

I suggest a change where the behavior of both Tags properties is the same. When a Resource Group or a Resource has no tags set, either let their Tags property…

  11. Maintain User Defined Routes via DNS Name

A script designed to run in Azure Automation which takes a list of DNS names and updates VNet User Defined Routes based on the current IPs.

A config file would contain everything usually defined for a UDR, only with FQDNs instead of IPs. The script would resolve the FQDNs and then create the UDRs. When IPs change new rules would be added, but the rule for the old IP should also be retained until it has not been seen for 24 hours - to allow for transient changes or round robin DNS. This will require the script perform some state…

  13. Generate documentation for your subscription by iterating over the Resource Groups & listing all details

It would be great if there was a PowerShell script that was able to generate documentation (.txt would be fine..) for your subscription. Listing all resources and their details.

  14. Create multiple VM's simultaneously

    Hello,

I am planning to prepare a power-shell script to create multiple VM's simultaneously. I have a CSV file where I will populate the data and import to the PowerShell scripts. Based on the details given in the CSV file powershell scripts will perform below actions-

Check RSG for Compute resource, if not available go ahead and create it.
Check RSG for Storage account, if not available go ahead and create it.
Check Storage account, if not available go ahead and create it.
Check Availability Set, if not available go ahead and create it.
    Create Nic cards
    Create VMs.
    I…

  16. upload and create vm with own os disk

When i have a local (OS based) VHD file. I want to upload the VHD and create a new VM from that VHD. I can't find one clear explanation on how to do this. Uploading a VHD and mark it as an OS disk is okay but how to create a VM with that VHD as a bootable disk?

  17. Download billing information

Script automation of billing download, so that when the end of the month arrives there is a copy of the bill with the actual costs not just resource consumption. This will enable visibility of historic Azure costs for token or prepay customers, which is not currently possible.

Even better would be to enable configuration of the billing information so that cost by tag or resource group can be readily calculated.

  18. Script Emulation

Often when someone writes a script and would like to test it out if its script will work or not, there should be a way to emulate the script behavior on Azure modules. I know Powershell ISE but still a lot of templates such as ARM is missing. Hope to see Microsoft delivering a Powershell emulator for writing powershell scripts for Azure soon.

  19. RBAC

Hi Team,Regarding the RBAC Roles. Unable to revoke a user role it is simply showing Failed to remove the user@123 as a owner for abcsd01.It will be great if the reason is mentioned for the failure.we are able to remove the role using Powershell . So it will be great if error is shown with proper explanation.

  20. Allow tagging of all eligible resources via Powershell

Currently, there are several types of resources that cannot be tagged via Powershell, for example, OperationsManagement/solutions. It is very tedious to have to use both Powershell and Command Line to input tags when the rest of a resource group can be tagged simply by scripting tag application down from the RG level.
