Web Apps

Web Apps in Azure App Service provides a scalable, reliable, and easy-to-use environment for hosting web applications. Select from a range of frameworks and templates to create a web site in seconds. Use any tool or OS to develop your site with .NET, PHP, Node.js, Python and more. Choose from a variety of source control options including TFS, GitHub, BitBucket and others to set up continuous integration and develop as a team.

More details about the services are available in the App Service documentation. If you have a technical issue, please open a post on the developer forums through Stack Overflow or MSDN.

Products that we listen to in this space include: App Service, Web Apps, API Apps and Web App for Containers.

  1. Consumption Plan With Always-On Included

I guess this is more feedback than request, because Microsoft has denied similar requests in this forum.

There are a vast number of Discord creators that develop bots, myself included. I need a small VPS presence, but it needs to be on 24/7 so other users can interact with it. The Always-On feature in Azure requires one to spend $50+ per month, which is devastating. We need a Consumption/pay-as-you-use tier with the Always-On feature included. $5 per month wouldn't be unreasonable. Instead, I'm now going to have to remove all my content from Azure, cancel my SQL subscription, and go…

  2. It would be good to write stdout log files in storage account

To avoid the webapp unresponsive because of file system quota exceed limit it would be great to write in storage account

  3. Upgrade npm to 6.13.4+because of a critical vulnerability

The NPM team warned everybody about a critical Binary planting vulnerability in NPM versions prior to 6.13.3. Right now we cannot use this version on Azure App Service. Please install npm v6.13.4 ASAP!

  4. CLI command for App Service Managed Certificate

Please add CLI command for performing "Add App Service Managed Certificate". I can automate every other facet of the App Services except for this!

  5. Modify UTC time the Azure Functions

Currently Microsoft's Azure funcions service, there is no way to modify UTC time for Brazil. The result of this is a divergence in the task execution time and also in the logs that are collected by Application Insight and Azure Monitor.

  6. Please have a reliable way for applications to get their slot name

Right now our application code has no way of reliably figuring out which slot it is operating within. WEBSITEHOSTNAME is invalid when performing slot swaps and APPSETTINGWEBSITESITE_NAME is the same for all slots.

Also, we need the slot name before processing any HTTP requests, so can't really parse the hostname in an HTTP request either. This should be the responsibility of the hosting service to tell which slot is hosting the application.

  7. Enable dev/test plans for Web App for Containers (Windows)

Currently, Web App for Containers (Windows) only allows selecting production plans PC2-4.

Please allow using dev/test plans for lower cost during development.

  8. Update Azure Functions sandbox to include Visual Fox Pro OLE DB provider

The issue simply is that the Visual Fox Pro OLE DB driver is not installed on function machines.

The driver is available from Microsoft here - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14839.

It should be as simple as to copy the vfpoledb.dll file into the D:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\ directory along with the other OLE DB drivers that are currently included. I have tried to do this myself through the Kudu console but don't have premissions of course.

  9. Parallel Deploy w/ Java App using Tomcat in webapp

we currently have a RHEL VM Cluster that allows parallel deploys. meaning that a client stays on the current code version until they log out. then on next login they would be moved to the most current version deployed. this is dont with multicasting the sessionId to all app servers so if the traffic is moved, they dont need a new session id bc it still exists on the new server. currently with webapps (linux, tomcat 8.x, java) there is no way to do this. using deploy slots will insta kick clients out of the session and move them to…

  10. Allow auto-shutdown of Web Apps in DevTest Labs

Allow Web Apps running on App Service to be auto-shutdown when running in a DevTest Lab.

DevTest Labs currently allows auto-shutdown for VMs. You can add PaaS services to DevTest Labs via a "Public Repository" or templates, so please extend auto-shutdown functions to these services.

  13. Install a Docker container as part of a Site Extension, but not as the primary App Service site.

I want to use an agent that is written in Go to listen for requests from within the App Service. Although this can be accomplished by running the Go agent in a separate VM, the intent is to have it seamlessly available within the App Service. We will be installing another agent-like library into the App Service, and it will be embedded in the web app so that it can monitor it and send data to the Go agent.

  14. Enable Hybrid Connections to work with read-only routing feature in SQL Server Availability Groups

We have a setup where App Service in Azure connects to on-premise SQL Server via Hybrid Connection. SQL Server environment on-premise is AlwaysOn Availability Group of 3 servers.

Azure App Service uses connection string, where "Server=" part specifies Availability Group Listener DNS name. App Service connects to AG Listener just fine, and listener directs App Service to primary server. Setup works fine and App Service can read data from primary server.

However, when we add "ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly" part into connection string, App Service can't connect to SQL Server and throws generic "network specific or instance related..." error. Our goal by adding…

  16. Stick to the original timeline for App Services in UAE

We have clients in the middle east who are currently hosted in Europe. This causes high latency which would be solved by hosting in UAE.

  18. Offer higher memory / RAM app service plans

I can see this has been raised before but we would really like to see plan options with higher memory. We could host about twice as many applications on the same plan if memory was increased to something like 32gb. Our apps aren't CPU intensive but need more memory, nor any more up.

    Thanks!

  19. Make Small App Service Plans (S1/B1) more reliable

We've faced a issue of random high CPU in App Service Plan (S1), Azure support says that it is due to internal monitoring. But my suggestion is why to keep app service plan on such low resources that internal monitoring services suck the CPU / Memory resources.

In Short - Microsoft should make the azure internal services to use minimum resources / increase resources for small app service plans such as S1.

  20. Custom domain and path for web app easy authentication (AD), when going through application gateway

As of now if you have a domain pointing to application gateway which points to different services where one of those uses the easy auth, that service uses its own default azure domain instead of the domain pointing at application gateway with the path assigned to it (e.g /webportal)

which makes easy auth not useful when there is an application gateway in front of it
