Web Apps

Web Apps in Azure App Service provide a scalable, reliable, and easy-to-use environment for hosting web applications. Select from a range of frameworks and templates to create a web site in seconds. Use any tool or OS to develop your site with .NET, PHP, Node.js or Python. Choose from a variety of source control options including TFS, GitHub, and BitBucket to set up continuous integration and develop as a team.

  1. Provide access to HTTPERR logs

Currently, enabling "Web Server Logging" appears to archive only the W3C request logs. The HTTPERR logs are the only way to see any requests that failed or were rejected by the server due to TCP timeouts, idle connections, filled request queues, and similar circumstances.

    • Ability to suspend App Service Plans without charge

To save on costs, we want the ability to shut down an App Service Plan overnight while nobody is using it. We can shut down the Web App itself in an automated fashion, but the App Service Plan still charges us even through there are no running instances. Deleting and rebuilding the App Service and the App Service Plan is an option, but it is messy. Please consider not charging for periods where there are no running resources attached to the App Service Plan.

      • Support optional client certificates for TLS mutual auth

        Client certificat optional

In IIS the client certificat may be:
        - ignored
        - accepted (certificat optional)
        - asked (certificat mandatory)

But on app service it can't be "accepted".

        • Add PowerShell support for managing autoscale

I'd like to be able to manage autoscaling my web app from an Azure Automation runbook. A PowerShell interface to manage autoscale settings would be extremely useful for this.

          • Allow access to certificate stores

As of today, you can't programatically install your own certificates (e.g. read from App_Data and Add(..) to store) to the Root or CertificateAuthority stores. This is seen in the LocalMachine as well as CurrentUser certificate store location. The PaaS responds with a "CryptographicException: Access is denied." which is bizarre because non-basic plan customers are paying for the entire underlying VM. Even on the basic plan you should allow this but restrict it to the CurrentUser store location since the VM/IIS could be shared with other cloud customers.

As of now, you can only access the "My" store which is a…

            • Create Additional App Service Plans with More Memory

When running multiple sites or applications on an app service plan with low CPU usage but high memory usage it is possible to run into memory contention which leads to downtime. Auto scaling does not help with this scenario. The "mitigate" feature is useful, but it would be better to offer a few new service levels with additional memory for such application. For example, when using .NET caching for certain objects locally in the OS.

              • Document the accuracy of the system clock

There is currently no official SLA or documentation on what the accuracy or update frequency of the system clock is (at service start and over time).

Regardless of the actual values, they should be documented so that developers know how much skew they can expect from APIs like System.DateTime.UtcNow() and judge whether those APIs are sufficient for their application

                • Tell if Microsoft Azure Alerts are caused by platform issues

One of my web apps have clogged my inbox with Microsoft Azure Alerts and I recently finished a support errand on this issue. It turns out that all of them happened in the middle of platform issues known by the backend. There is currently no way for me to find out about this, causing the flooding error messages to become a "The boy who cried wolf"-issue. If there currently is a platform issue, please state so in the Microsoft Azure Alert that's emailed out so that we do not have to start checking our web-apps late on weekends for no…

                    • Disable SSLv2 due to DROWN attack

According to the test page https://*.azurewebsites.net sites are vulnerable to the DROWN attack because SSLv2 is enabled:

                      SSLv2 should be Disabled.

                      • Allow HTTP Basic authentication on basic apps

Sometimes there is a need to deny access to a directory path via basic http authentication. This doesn't seem possible to set up via the azure portal.

                        • traffic routine based on Azure AD Group

Now we can split traffic between multiple deployment slots, but this will be done randomly. My customer asked me about option- when he can define azure active directory group, who will be redirected to some deployment slot.

                          • Make Easy Tables Support Unlimited Columns

So far, I am very pleased with Microsoft Azure. Previously I had used Parse, which implemented something similar in their user interface to easy tables. However, after switching to Azure I cannot see all of my columns on my table. This is because the width of the blade does not not expand to fit the table and does not provide a horizontal scroll feature such as Parse. In the images attached, notice the difference between the same table, shown on Microsoft Azure and on Parse. It is problematic to read my data through the portal. Any comments or suggestions you…

                            • Allow AAD multi-tenant Apps using App Service Authentication and Authorization

Allow Azure Active Directory (AAD) multi-tenant Apps using App Service Authentication and Authorization.

After on-boarding a tenant with a multi tenant AAD App (Client), the tenant is not able to login to protected Web/Api Apps on App Services.

The ClientId used is the same in AAD Multitenant App.
The STS url is/can only be configured for the App/Client primary tenant GUID.

There are no options to enable-multi tenant STS on App Service Authentication and authorization interface.

                              • Getting deployment id from continuous deployments

Using Kudu we can find out environment variables etc, but unfortunately little information about the deployment information from a "Continuous deployment".
I see the source, i.e. "GitHub", but it would be good to grab some more information, such as deployment id (e.g. d8950da).

Room for improvements for something I've missed?

Thank you Johan for pointing this out. As a temporary workaround, the Deployment Details blade in the Azure Portal shows entries such as the following: “Preparing deployment for commit id … .” We will look into options for surfacing the deployment ID.

Please add more performance options like VMs for App service apps. I need more stronger machines under App services like DS2 VMs (faster CPU + SSD for example). Please add options to select stronger machines under App services.

                                  • Azure webapps, sort the application settings

I would like the application settings section of the Azure webapp (and any other Azure resource) to have a default alphabetical sort, or even better, to be able to configure the order of the key/value pairs displayed.

This would improve application management where keys need to be readily identified (e.g. Client secret keys which need to be renewed).
The current portal simply appends the last created setting to the bottom, which means that developers and sysadmins have to be very fastidious around knowing the full extent of app settings to begin with.

                                    Thanks!

                                    • Install necessary updates to make the new cultures like en-HK available

Unless I'm missing something, CultureInfo for en-HK is not available for .NET code running on Azure App Service ("CultureNotFoundException: Culture is not supported. en-HK is an invalid culture identifier"). On Azure Cloud Services, the latest guest OS includes this culture and many others.

I guess this is related to automatic OS update management, which Azure App Service should do automatically. I'm uncertain as to what factors are involved for making the latest .NET cultures available in App Service. Will these cultures be made available soon, or is there some reason why they're not supported?

Note that I'm talking about "out…

                                      • Add "Machine Move" Alerts and Webhooks

Would it be possible to set up Alerts and Webhooks for when Azure changes the underlying machines that run each App Service?

We run a website which (as part of it's operation) tracks the machines it is running on. Through this we can see that every now and again the underlying machine changes with no apparent reason. We assume that this is because the underlying machine has been patched and needs a reboot (or something like that) and thus our website has been provisioned to a different machine. All of that is fine, we understand this is all part and…

                                        • Add support for managing ip/domain restrictions from Azure portal.

It's currently possible by editing the web.config file, we'd like to manage these settings from Azure Portal. Security settings should be managed by admins, not developers.
