Web Apps

Web Apps in Azure App Service provide a scalable, reliable, and easy-to-use environment for hosting web applications. Select from a range of frameworks and templates to create a web site in seconds. Use any tool or OS to develop your site with .NET, PHP, Node.js or Python. Choose from a variety of source control options including TFS, GitHub, and BitBucket to set up continuous integration and develop as a team.

  1. Add PowerShell support for managing autoscale

I'd like to be able to manage autoscaling my web app from an Azure Automation runbook. A PowerShell interface to manage autoscale settings would be extremely useful for this.

    • Allow access to certificate stores

As of today, you can't programatically install your own certificates (e.g. read from App_Data and Add(..) to store) to the Root or CertificateAuthority stores. This is seen in the LocalMachine as well as CurrentUser certificate store location. The PaaS responds with a "CryptographicException: Access is denied." which is bizarre because non-basic plan customers are paying for the entire underlying VM. Even on the basic plan you should allow this but restrict it to the CurrentUser store location since the VM/IIS could be shared with other cloud customers.

As of now, you can only access the "My" store which is a…

      • Create Additional App Service Plans with More Memory

When running multiple sites or applications on an app service plan with low CPU usage but high memory usage it is possible to run into memory contention which leads to downtime. Auto scaling does not help with this scenario. The "mitigate" feature is useful, but it would be better to offer a few new service levels with additional memory for such application. For example, when using .NET caching for certain objects locally in the OS.

        • Adding multiple connection strings

Adding multiple connection strings in VS2015 | Server Explorer | {app} | Settings only the last added connection string is editable. They all receive the Name "Name" if each were to get a unique name like "Name1" "Name2" etc then any connection string could be edited at the leisure of the user.

          • rc4 still accepted

Either through a configuration/scale option, or just blanket by default, I want to be able to disable RC4 ciphers (and any other insecure cipher suites) in Azure Websites so I can get an A rating (or better) from the Qualys SSL Labls SSL Server Test (https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html).

This is a previous suggestion which has been marked as completed but clearly is not as numerous people are still having the issue and now having to consider moving supplier if passing a pen test which tests for this is part of a contractual agreement with the customer.

            • App Service Plan instance count is unreliable

When selecting a service plan, we've seen many cases of seeing different information in the Information part and in the Scale Out graph. The information tab almost always shows '1' even when you use 10 instances, while the Scale Out has a tendency to be very slow in showing when instances have been liberated (probably because of the granularity of 1 hour), and it has a tendency thus to show 10 when we only use 1.

              • Bug? Restoring a web app places it into a broken 'Restored' App Service Plan

When using the old management UI to restore a web app, the web app is restored into a new app service plan called Restored{number}.

This Restored app service plan is also broken.
It's placed in a resource group, but doesn't show up anywhere.
Because of this, the web app can't be moved to another app service plan without some fiddling: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/documentation/articles/azure-web-sites-web-hosting-plans-in-depth-overview/#comment-2594946664

                • Cannot prefix password with "." (period) when creating Umbraco database user

When creating an Umbraco Web App in the portal (https://portal.azure.com/#create/umbracoorg.UmbracoCMS) i noticed a weird error when creating password under Web App Settings > Database Username/pwd: if i prefix the password with "." (period) it can't be validated no matter how complex password is.
The validation claims pwd must be at least 8 char, contain at least 1 upper AND one lower case char, and either numbers OR special chars.
However if i prefix with "." the password is never validated as compliant...

                    • Kudu console for continous webjob should show LAST 100 lines, NOT first

Currently, when implementing continous WebJob and using Console.Writeline() inside the code, after some time, we can observer following message: "Reached maximum allowed output lines for this run, to see all of the job's logs you can enable website application diagnostics". The console should show last 100 lines and remove older ones.

                      • Indicate the deployment details before swapping

My workflow is I have continuous deployment with GitHub that deploys on a staging or pre-prod slot. Before I swap, I HAVE TO look at the continuous deployment blade if it deployed properly before I go to the swap.

It would be beneficial to display the deployment details about to be swapped to the production server before I click the mighty Swap button.

                        • Document the accuracy of the system clock

There is currently no official SLA or documentation on what the accuracy or update frequency of the system clock is (at service start and over time).

Regardless of the actual values, they should be documented so that developers know how much skew they can expect from APIs like System.DateTime.UtcNow() and judge whether those APIs are sufficient for their application

                          • Tell if Microsoft Azure Alerts are caused by platform issues

One of my web apps have clogged my inbox with Microsoft Azure Alerts and I recently finished a support errand on this issue. It turns out that all of them happened in the middle of platform issues known by the backend. There is currently no way for me to find out about this, causing the flooding error messages to become a "The boy who cried wolf"-issue. If there currently is a platform issue, please state so in the Microsoft Azure Alert that's emailed out so that we do not have to start checking our web-apps late on weekends for no…

                              • Ability to lock App Service Application Settings values

It would be nice to "lock" certain aspects of the App Service. For example, after the .NET Framework Version of an App Service has been set, it will rarely purposefully change. If there was a "lock" checkbox next to app settings that you would have to uncheck in addition to changing the value as a safeguard against unintended changes. Or, on save of Application Settings, if a summary screen appeared showing you exactly what you were changing.

                                back story:
We accidentally changed .NET Framework Version of our App Service under the Application Settings tab and saved the change. We believe…

The azure portal provides the ability to lock a resource for read-only.

You can do this navigating to the resource, then under Settings>Locks.

From here you can set a read-only lock or a delete lock.

                                  read-only would accomplish your request.

                                  • Update Webjobs SDK to support newer Azure Storage Library

Webjobs SDK only supports WindowsAzure.Storage ≤ 5.0.2, so I can't use the newer libraries... It would be nice to have this updated...

                                    Unable to resolve dependencies. 'WindowsAzure.Storage 6.2.2-preview' is not compatible with 'Microsoft.Azure.WebJobs 1.1.1 constraint: WindowsAzure.Storage (≥ 4.3.0 && ≤ 5.0.2)'. 0

                                    • Allow HTTP Basic authentication on basic apps

Sometimes there is a need to deny access to a directory path via basic http authentication. This doesn't seem possible to set up via the azure portal.

                                      • Media Wiki Added as a Service

I would like to see Media Wiki added as a deployment option or a service which anyone can deploy from Azure. I did not see any options for deploying any kind of Wiki on the Azure menus.

                                        • Add Support for System.Configuration file and configSource Attributes

It would be great to have support with deployed websites (and web jobs) along with the Application Settings (<appSettings /> configuration element) to support the "file" and "configSource" attributes, allowing developers to upload files into a special directory that gets resolved at runtime, so that we can do such things as storing secrets and sensitive information in separate configuration sections.

Additionally, it would be great to have better integration with encrypting/decrypting these configuration sections. There is a cool Visual Studio extension that did this, but it is not current, as an example:
                                          https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/bff460ef-5907-4c3b-b1cf-322fc5060fe9

The new one should be able to…
