Web Apps

Web Apps in Azure App Service provide a scalable, reliable, and easy-to-use environment for hosting web applications. Select from a range of frameworks and templates to create a web site in seconds. Use any tool or OS to develop your site with .NET, PHP, Node.js or Python. Choose from a variety of source control options including TFS, GitHub, and BitBucket to set up continuous integration and develop as a team.

How can we improve Azure Web Apps?

  1. App Service Environment Scaling Time is Too Long

It takes a minimum of 2-3 hours, and a maximum of 20-30 hours to perform any scaling operation on App Service Environments.

This is terribly slow compared to expectations compared with using Classic Cloud Services.

We are not always able to predict spontaneous traffic growth, and scalling too wide or tall in advance is wasteful of budget and resources.

Thanks for the feedback. We definitely want to improve the ASE scaling experience and have been working on it for several months already. You should already be able to see some of the impacts of those changes rolling out and it will only continue to improve.

    • Azure App Service Certificate : Add support for EV certificates (Extended Validation)

Azure App Service Certificate permit to have standard SSL and Wildcard. But need to add a new SKU for permit customers to register an EV Certificate too (Extended Validation)

Azure Key Vault Recently announced support for EV certificates with 3rd party integration.

        https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/kv/2016/09/26/get-started-with-azure-key-vault-certificates/

Currently there are no immediate plans to offer EV certificates using Azure App Service Certificates. This item is tracked in our backlog.

      • Add alerts for failed/successful git deployments

When using git for continuum deployment users need to manually check if the deployment is successful or not. An alert would help take action faster.

        • Add path support for the "authentication enabled" option

The "authentication enabled" option is great for quick and easy auth-enabling of websites. It would be great if it had pathing support so that I could control which parts of the website got protected and which didn't.

          • Provide a real support for integrating Web Apps with resources inside a virtual network

The current implementation of Vnet integration with Web Apps is nowhere near good enough.
            1. ASE's: ASE's are fine, but the extreme cost makes it completely unrealistic to use the feature except for very large sites.
            2. Point-to-Site Vnets: If my vnet is an Expressroute vnet then I have no way to connecto to it using this feature

We need a well-working and easy way of integrating webapps with vnets. The optimal solution would be a simple "yes/no" for giving the web app an ip address inside the virtual network.

            • Add Quota and Set Retention Setting from ASM to ARM Portal

Could the Quota and Set Retention Setting from the Classic Azure Portal Web App -> Configure -> Site Diagnostics be moved over to the ARM Portal. These are two pretty important settings that seem to be missing from the new App Services -> Settings -> Diagnostics logs blade.

              • Azure App Service Backup Alerts

Could email notifications please be added to the Azure App Service Backups. It would be nice to be notified on a daily/weekly basis if the backups of my App Services and completing successfully, partially successfully or failing.

                • Azure Notifications to Microsoft Flow

Azure could really help our team communication by allowing notifications to go to Flow so we can post them where our team can see.

For example, when a slot is swapped, I want that to go somewhere so people know. We manually post notifications to Skype right now to affected teams.

It would be great to get alerts, notifications of new resources created, and other messages sent to Flow so we can use them however we want.

                  • Allow uploading private certificates to the trusted root certificate store

It is quite common for certificate authorities to issue certificates for enterprise customers that come from root ca's not already in the trusted root certificate store.

It would be good if you could allow private root certificates to be added to the trusted root certificate store.

                    • App Service connect to P2S into a coexistence model (VPN + ExR gateway in the same VNET)

Please allow App Services to connect to the P2S VPN of a VNET that is running an Express Route Gateway and VPN Gateway.

                      • performance test can't be turned off

Only way to disable performance test after deployment is to delete the deployment source and readd it.

                        • Fix export of resource type 'Microsoft.Web/sites/config'

get error :"Could not get resources of the type 'Microsoft.Web/sites/config'. Resources of this type will not be exported. (Code: ExportTemplateProviderError)"

Among the obvious it would be nice to see how to set various app settings like turning off PHP and activating 'Always On' or maybe turning off 'ARR Affinity'.

It seems like every option is available EXCEPT this. Seems like it could be bolted on similarly to the others, like -WebSocketsEnabled<Boolean>.

This is currently not supported with Set-AzureWebsite or Set-AzureRmWebApp commands, we are currently looking into ways to add the support to the new Azure Resource Manager PowerShell cmdlets
                              http://aka.ms/webapp-powershell

For now you can use something like the following:

                              Define the following function:
                              Function SetWebApp($ResourceGroupName, $SiteName, $ConfigObject)
                              {
                              Set-AzureRmResource -ResourceGroupName $ResourceGroupName -ResourceType Microsoft.Web/sites -Name $SiteName -PropertyObject $ConfigObject -ApiVersion $WebAppApiVersion -Force
                              }

                              And call it like this:
                              SetWebApp $ResourceGroupName $SiteName @{ “alwaysOn” = $true }

                              Ahmed, Azure App Service Team

                            • Show Deployment Source

Add the ability to view the "Deployment source" settings for a Web App.
Example: When setting the Deployment Source for a Web App, if you select Drop Box as a source and provide a directory, the Management UI doesn't show you what directory the deployment is coming from after it has been set. It would be nice to be able to see what the directory was so you can confirm it is coming from the right directory without having to Disconnect and Reconnect the deployment source.

                                • Allow same dns name on multiple web apps

When migrating between two azure web apps, I wanted to have the same dns name active on both the new and the old web app on the same time. Of course the old one has been authorized through DNS and the new one is authorized through DNS as well. But to avoid downtime having both accept requests for the live domain name during DNS propagation would be good.

                                  • tomcat/jetty problem report in azure portal

By now if a java web server is not running nothing is reported in the azure portal.

Start/Stop/Restart are made over the IIS, that then starts/stops/restarts the corresponding java web server.

If we have any problem with the java web server, nothing is reported. We need to go the process explorer and check the logs to see when the java web server is not able to run.

                                    • improve java site logs in azure

By now the only way to see Tomcat logs in real-time, is by opening the Kudu Debug Console, browse into tomcat logs folder and type tail -f catalina-YYYY-MM-DD.log

Azure PowerShell: Get-AzureWebSiteLog -Name webappname –Tail doesn't work.

"Log Stream" in Azure Portal are showing the IIS logs and not the Tomcat logs even in the "web server logs".

You should support the same features for the Jetty web server.

Azure should be technology agnostic, but for the moment it's not! You need to make and extra effort on it!

                                      • Add "Virtual Directory" info for Web App Publish

When targeting an Azure Web App Virtual Directory, the label "Site Name" gives the user no clue that the Virtual Directory needs to be appended here AND to the Destination URL.

Most helpful would be a modification to the Publish Web screen for a Web Application Project, perhaps a "Virtual Directory?" in italics with a "circle i" to hover over with more information.

Also helpful would be some text on the Azure Web App -> All Settings -> Application Settings -> Virtual Applications and Directories entry. Maybe even move the Virtual Applications and Directories up a level in the All…

                                        • Allow us to remove the Zend Extension "opcache" from the default php.ini file

When you run PHP 5.5+ in an Azure website, the opcache Zend Extension is automatically enabled as the first Zend extension in the php.ini file.

                                          "[ExtensionList]
                                          ...
                                          zend_extension=php_opcache.dll"

Any other Zend extension we add is appended after opcache.

Since this file is read-only, you cannot remove this extension.

This conflicts with other Zend extensions like ioncube, which require themselves to be the first extension loaded.

Please allow us to choose whether the opcache extension is enabled in php.ini OR give us a way to remove it WITHOUT running a custom PHP runtime of our own.

                                          I'd much rather you manage…
